U4GM - 6 Tips to Spend Your Runes Wisely in Elden Ring

In Elden Ring, Runes are more than just currency—they're the lifeblood of your progression. From leveling up your stats to upgrading gear and purchasing items, they’re at the center of every major decision. I learned the hard way that mismanaging Runes can lead to frustration and setbacks, especially in the early and mid-game. After hundreds of hours in the Lands Between, I’ve developed a clear strategy for making the most of every Rune. Whether you're new to the game or looking to optimize your builds, these six tips will help you spend your Runes wisely.

1. Prioritize Leveling Core Stats First

When I first started out, I spread my Runes across multiple stats, thinking I’d be a jack-of-all-trades. Big mistake. In Elden Ring, focused builds tend to be more powerful. Spend your early Elden Ring Runes on the core stats that define your playstyle—Strength for melee bruisers, Intelligence for sorcerers, Dexterity for agile fighters, and so on. Don’t waste Runes on stats that won’t contribute directly to your combat effectiveness.

2. Invest in Weapon Upgrades Before Buying New Ones

It's tempting to buy every shiny weapon a merchant offers, but your Runes are better spent upgrading weapons you’re actually using. A +3 or +6 weapon outperforms most base weapons in the same category. I realized this after sticking with a simple Claymore through much of the game—upgrading it made a bigger difference than switching to more exotic options. Always consider if your current weapon can be enhanced instead of replaced.

3. Buy Crafting Materials in Moderation

Crafting is essential, especially for consumables like arrows, fire pots, or status-curing items. But don’t blow all your Runes on materials you rarely use. Instead, assess what you use frequently and stock up accordingly. This becomes especially important in the late game, where Rune demands escalate.

4. Save Runes Before Boss Fights

One of the most frustrating experiences I had was walking into a boss fight with 40,000 Runes, dying, and losing them for good. Before engaging in any high-risk combat, I make sure to either level up or spend my Runes on gear or items. Use your best farming route to grind back later if needed, but never gamble with a large sum you’re not prepared to lose.

5. Don’t Overcommit to NPC Vendors

It’s easy to get caught up in buying every spell or item a vendor sells. While NPCs offer unique goods, many of them aren’t essential to your core build. I’ve wasted thousands of Runes on gear I never used. Focus on merchants who sell upgrade materials or essential consumables, and revisit others only when your build demands it.

6. Consider Affordable Rune Sources

If you're short on time or repeatedly losing progress, you may want to look into sources for cheap Elden Ring runes. While some purists prefer grinding everything manually, others (myself included during New Game+) find that affordable Rune purchases help focus more on exploration and boss strategies rather than repetitive farming. Just be sure you use a reputable platform and avoid anything that could compromise your save file.

Spending Runes in Elden Ring isn’t just about acquiring power—it’s about timing and efficiency. By investing wisely, protecting your gains, and focusing on what truly matters to your build, you can avoid unnecessary frustrations and enjoy a smoother journey through the Lands Between. These strategies helped me go from struggling Tarnished to confident Elden Lord—and they can do the same for you.
